US claims for unemployment aid jump, but remain low

The number of Americans applying for unemployment benefits jumped last week but remain low overall, even as the Federal Reserve has furiously raised interest rates to beat down inflation and cool the labor market. The Labor Department reported Thursday that applications for jobless claims for the week ending April 29 rose by 13,000 to 242,000 from 229,000 the previous week. The weekly claims numbers are considered a proxy for layoffs. The four-week moving average of claims, which flattens some of the week-to-week volatility, rose by 3,500 to 239,250.Overall, 1.81 million people were collecting unemployment benefits the week that ended April 22, about 38,0000 fewer that the previous week.American workers are enjoying unusual job security despite rising interest rates, economic uncertainty and fears of a looming recession.SourceItron: Q1 Earnings Snapshot

More than live towns

DENVER (KDVR) — Colorado has a rich history of people and communities, and though several of those communities did not thrive, they left marks that still stand today. The remnants of civilizations that fascinate historians and travelers are called ghost towns, and there are hundreds of them in the Centennial State.A member of the Ghost Town Club of Colorado, Joan Fields described ghost towns as "places all over the state that, for whatever reason, the community failed at some point in time." BERLIN — French President Emmanuel Macron plans to visit Germany in early July against the backdrop of Franco-German disagreements over key policy areas like finances, energy and how to handle China.Macron is expected to arrive in Germany on July 2 and stay until July 4, with the highlight of the visit being a state banquet in the Bellevue Palace in Berlin hosted by German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier on July 3, according to three officials familiar with the preparations of the visit. The French president is also scheduled to meet German Chancellor Olaf Scholz to discuss European and international politics. The planned state visit comes at a sensitive time.
