Gun rights activists have threatened to sue Los Gatos over its recent concealed carry ordinance, which prohibits guns in sensitive places like schools and places of worship.Michel and Associates, law firm representing the California Rifle & Pistol Association and the Second Amendment Foundation, recently sent a letter to the town saying the concealed carry ordinance approved this summer infringes on the constitutional rights of gun owners.“Specifically, the ordinance makes it so that firearms are prohibited to be carried – even by those with a permit – in town property, public transit and places of worship,” the letter reads.Town attorney Gabrielle Whelan said the council met in a closed session last week and voted to suspend enforcing the ordinance on those locations until anticipated litigation against the state is resolved.“We’re taking it seriously,” Whelan said. “The town’s ordinance is modeled on pending state legislation.”The ordinance was set to go into effect on Sept. 1...

AI technology lets you talk to Jesus or Satan. What do they say?

By AJ Willingham | CNNIn his 2013 hit “Beer With Jesus,” country singer Thomas Rhett imagines a barstool meeting with his Christian lord and savior.“If I could have a beer with Jesus …I’d be sure to let him do the talkin’Careful when I got the chance to askHow’d you turn the other cheekTo save a sorry soul like meDo you hear the prayers I sendWhat happens when life endsAnd when you think you’re comin’ back again?”Similar pontifications — albeit without the beer — have occupied the Christian imagination for centuries. It’s no surprise, then, that the explosion of AI technology has capitalized on fulfilling such wishes. Several apps now offer the faithful, or perhaps the bored, a way to summon the voices of Jesus, the Virgin Mary and even Satan through the wonders of language modeling programs. What would Jesus do? You can ask him yourself, but there are a few caveats. For one, the answer won’t actually be divine, and it may not be thorough enough to satisfy.“These chatbots are only as...

MANILA, Philippines (AP) — Everything had looked so easy for the U.S. at the Basketball World Cup. Points were coming in bunches, final scores were blowouts and stress wasn’t a problem. Until Friday. If the Americans were waiting for a serious test at the World Cup, they can wait no more. And that result, combined with Lithuania’s win later Friday over Greece, sent the Americans to the quarterfinals regardless of what happens Sunday against Lithuania.“These games are going to happen,” U.S. coach Steve Kerr said. “And you have to be able to fight through them. I thought our guys did a great job of that.”Anthony Edwards scored all of his team-high 17 p...

Brits balk at Rishi Sunak’s short-haul helicopter habit

Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 21:15:44 GMT

LONDON — Rishi Sunak likes to city hop by helicopter. The British public doesn’t approve.Almost half of Britons, about 49 percent, oppose the British prime minister traveling via private plane or helicopter, while 54 percent reckon he should take public transport to official engagements even if it takes longer to reach his destination, polling from Redfield and Wilton Strategies conducted this week found. Just 28 percent think he should take the fastest route no matter the mode of transport. The research comes amid a raft of negative headlines after he used a helicopter to travel to and from Norwich on Tuesday, a trip of little more than 100 miles, and after he traveled to Southampton from London in May by helicopter instead of a short train journey. The Mirror newspaper reported earlier this month Sunak used jets and helicopters to travel around the UK more than any other recent prime minister, taking one flight every eight days on average. In a sign Downing Str...
