I’m a full-fledged “craniac” now that I’ve spent four days awestruck at one of Earth’s most epic animal migrations — on, of all places, the wind-whistling prairies of central Nebraska.Every year — perhaps dating back eons — about 500,000 sandhill cranes roost along the Platte River, swooping down in spellbinding squadrons and resembling both prehistoric pterodactyls and the flying monkeys from “The Wizard of Oz.” Deeply stacked in shallow water and on sandbars, the cranes’ deafening cacophony will absolutely blow your mind — at times their nonstop racket sounded like raucous crowds cheering gladiators at Rome’s Coliseum.World-renowned anthropologist Jane Goodall, who has crane-watched here for 20 seasons, compares the feathered phenomena to the famed wildebeest migration in Africa. I too felt I was on another continent instead of in the Cornhusker State (and birthplace of Kool-Aid).Sandhill cranes are social with each other and entertaining to watch at roosting sites in Nebraska’s P...Survey: Half of trans and nonbinary youth in the US ‘seriously considered’ suicide in the past year

Muri Assunção | New York Daily NewsAbout half of young trans and nonbinary youth in the U.S. seriously contemplated suicide in the past year, as a record-breaking number of bills restricting the rights of LGBTQ people — especially transgender youth — are enacted in state legislatures across the country.Overall, about four in 10 LGBTQ young people, ages 13 to 24, reported they “seriously considered” taking their lives in the past year, with transgender and nonbinary people reporting even higher rates than their peers. Nearly two in 10 actually attempted suicide. That’s according to the fifth annual survey on the mental health of LGBTQ young people living in the U.S. released by The Trevor Project, the nation’s leading suicide and crisis organization for LGBTQ youth. After hearing from nearly 29,000 respondents, researchers found that LGBTQ kids and young adults continue to report “significantly higher” rates of suicide risk.“Among transgender and nonbinary young people, half seriously ...L.A. street takeover crackdown nets 21 arrests; 13 cars seized

The Biden administration will send 1,500 troops to the U.S.-Mexico border ahead of an expected migrant surge following the end of coronavirus pandemic-era restrictions.Military personnel will do data entry, warehouse support and other administrative tasks so that U.S. Customs and Border Protection can focus on fieldwork, White House spokeswoman Karine Jean-Pierre said Tuesday. The troops “will not be performing law enforcement functions or interacting with immigrants, or migrants,” Jean-Pierre said. “This will free up Border Patrol agents to perform their critical law enforcement duties.”The troops will carry out this support for 90 days, said Pentagon spokesman Air Force Brig. Gen. Pat Ryder, “until CBP can address these needs through contracted support.”It's unclear when the troops would be deployed. The COVID-19 restrictions allowed U.S. officials to turn away tens of thousands of migrants crossing the southern border, but those restrictions will lift May 11, and border officials...Los Angeles County fully out of a drought
