A sweeping gun bill aimed at tightening firearm laws passes in the Massachusetts House

BOSTON (AP) — The Massachusetts House approved a sweeping gun bill Wednesday aimed at tightening firearm laws, cracking down on unregistered “ghost guns” and strengthening the state’s assault-style weapons ban.The bill, which passed on a 120-38 vote, would also prohibit individuals from carrying a gun into a person’s home without their permission and require key gun components to be serialized and registered with the state. The 125-page bill — a priority for Democratic Massachusetts House Speaker Ronald Mariano — is in part a response to a 2022 U.S. Supreme Court ruling that U.S. citizens have a right to carry firearms in public for self-defense.The proposal would create new laws that bar firing guns at or near homes and outlaw carrying firearms while intoxicated. It would also prohibit carrying firearms in schools, polling places and government buildings. The bill expands the state’s ban on assault weapons by prohibiting new purchases of AR-15-style weapons. It would also ban s...

North Carolina Republicans pitch Congress maps that could help them pick up 3 or 4 seats next year

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — North Carolina Republicans on Wednesday pitched new maps for the state’s congressional districts starting in 2024 that appear to threaten the reelection of at least three current Democratic U.S. House members. Senate redistricting committee leaders introduced two proposals that would rework the boundary lines for the state’s 14 U.S. House seats. The House and Senate want to enact a final plan by the end of the month. Candidate filing for the 2024 election is set to begin in early December.North Carolina’s delegation is currently split between seven Democrats and seven Republicans following the 2022 elections conducted using a map that was drawn by a panel of trial judges. Supporters of that plan said it reflected North Carolina’s usually close races for statewide elected office. But statewide election data attached to Wednesday’s proposals — results designed to determine partisan performance — indicate one of the Senate’s propo...

Movie Review: In ‘Nyad,’ Jodie Foster swims away with a showcase for Annette Bening

Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 18:05:00 GMT

In “Nyad,” there are two feats of perseverance on display. First, there is the ceaseless determination of Diane Nyad (Annette Bening) to accomplish a marathon swim from Cuba to Florida across 103 miles of open, shark-infested waters. Then there is the mettle of Nyad’s support team to tolerate the singularly self-absorbed and stubborn Nyad. Both, in the film, are an endurance sport.“Nyad,” which opens in limited theaters Friday and streams Nov. 3 on Netflix, is in many ways a conventional sports drama, defined by long odds and personal triumph. But there is enough here to help the film, directed by the intrepid filmmakers Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin, if not swim against the tide of sports-biopic convention then at least ride a swift current to the finish line.First and foremost there’s the fact that this is a sports drama led by two actresses in their 60s: Bening and Jodie Foster, who plays Diana’s best friend and personal trainer Bonnie Stoll. When “Ny...

X tests $1 fee for new users in Philippines, New Zealand in bid to target spam

Elon Musk’s social media platform X has begun charging a $1 fee to new users in the Philippines and New Zealand in a test designed to cut down on the spam and fake accounts flourishing on the site formerly known as Twitter. The company said late Tuesday that it has started trying out the annual subscription method for new and unverified accounts. The program, dubbed Not a Bot, won’t apply to existing users. It’s not clear why it only applies to New Zealand and the Philippines or why those countries were chosen.“This new test was developed to bolster our already successful efforts to reduce spam, manipulation of our platform and bot activity while balancing platform accessibility with the small fee amount,” the X support account tweeted. “It is not a profit driver.”Some experts said charging a fee might not do much to stop fake accounts and could even amplify the problem. If X decides to roll out the $1 fee worldwide, it could be ̶...

PUEBLO, Colo. Jared Polis said Wednesday.Polis toured the damage near Pueblo on Wednesday with local leaders and representatives with the National Transportation Safety Board. He also offered condolences to family and friends of Lafollette Henderson, the 60-year-old truck driver from Compton, California, who is survived by six children and 15 grandchildren. The steel bridge, built in 1958, collapsed Sunday when 30 cars from a BNSF Railway train hauling coal derailed while crossing over I-25. TikTok denies it’s controlled by China as exec faces Canadian MPs over security fears

OTTAWA — A TikTok executive faced off on Wednesday with Canadian lawmakers who have concerns that data from the app could end up in the hands of the Chinese government. Steve de Eyre, director of public policy and government affairs for TikTok Canada, said at a House of Commons committee meeting that the video-sharing app is not controlled by the Chinese government.Western governments have expressed worries that the popular platform owned by Beijing-based ByteDance could put sensitive data in the hands of China’s government or be used as a tool to further misinformation.Chinese law says the government can order companies to help it gather intelligence. When NDP MP Matthew Green asked about the law, another TikTok executive brushed off the question. “I’m not an expert in Chinese law,” said David Lieber, head of privacy public policy for the Americas. The federal government banned TikTok from government-owned devices in February, after its chief information off...

New Chicago police boss wants cops to be more aggressive

Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 18:05:00 GMT

CHICAGO — Larry Snelling is no stranger to the Chicago Police Department. The Englewood native has been on the job for 30 years. And that experience may have – at times – put him at odds with a sitting mayor known more for talking about equity and inclusion than crime and consequences. Snelling's mantra: "Remember who you are." In a sit-down interview with WGN Investigates, Snelling says he has carried those words with him since his earliest days as a patrol officer, well into the academy as a trainer and now as the head of CPD. What is CPD’s response time? Experts can’t say with certainty "It’s not just about you. It’s about your partner. It’s about the community. And most of all: It’s about the children of this city because we have to make sure they have a future," Snelling said.Newly anointed Snelling takes over a depleted department – down nearly 1,500 officers from just a few years ago – and a city frustrated by frequent flashes of lawlessness. F...
