A major piece to the puzzle was missing on "Wheel of Fortune" this week. For the third time ever, in more than 40 years, Vanna White is out sick. Don't worry, she's OK. White missed a day of filming back in August as she was recovering from COVID-19. That means she missed five episodes. Man on Man at Zebulon

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 14:11:48 GMT

Man on Man at Zebulon: Man On Man is erstwhile Faith No More man Roddy Bottum and his significant other Joey Holman. “It was double-sided,” Bottom told us of their working relationship back in June. “Fortunate in one way, that we’re boyfriends and we love each other, but also this thing opened up where, ‘oh we can create together.’ That is very rare.”“We had no idea we were making a band when we first started making the record,” Holman said. “We were just passing the time, and we were just writing music together. It was Roddy’s idea. We were driving from New York to L.A. and we had musical instruments. We knew we had to be stuck inside for a while, and we were just like, ‘Yeah, let’s make music.’ We didn’t have any concept of the future at all. It was just, ‘Let’s pass the time and let’s just survive and have some sort of a creative outlet.’ So we were very surprised and felt very lucky to be able to be here three years later at this point, and still doing it.”Phranc and dimber also...

California craft beer: Not your father’s fall seasonals

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 14:11:48 GMT

Now that fall is here, it’s time to put away those light lagers and golden ales of summer. Cooler weather calls for heartier beer. While many people reach for Märzens (or Oktoberfest beers), brown ales, red ales, amber ales, porters or stouts, there are many others that will satisfy your thirst at least as well or perhaps even better than those typical fall beers.A quick word on pumpkin beers: If you love the myriad pumpkin drinks that inevitably show up each fall, you’ll be happy to know that you’ll have no trouble getting your fill this October. And if that’s your passion, I won’t try to stop you. But here are a few more interesting suggestions.Maple beersBrewing with maple syrup is nothing new, but it’s not as common an addition as many other ingredients. It adds a unique sweetness and texture to the beer that’s perfect for fall, whether or not you’re having pancakes too.Check out Oakland’s Original Pattern Brewing Co., which makes Banshee, a maple brown ale tha...

San Jose leaders will let “Trash Bag Church” good deed go unpunished

San Jose City Councilmember Omar Torres tells me the city won’t be moving forward with any action against Jim Salata, the CEO of Garden City Construction who led a crew to remove the tattered tarp from downtown’s historic but dilapidated First Church of Christ, Scientist.Salata must have ruffled some feathers at City Hall in late August when crews removed the shredded black plastic that earned the building the nickname “Trash Bag Church.” Torres told this news organization city staff informed him that Salata didn’t have permission to enter the property to do the work — though he had a code to open the gate because of previous work he’d done on the site — and the city was considering fining him for trespassing. The idea of punishing someone for doing a job demanded by both Mayor Matt Mahan and Torres just a few days previously came as a surprise — and was seen by some as a slap in the face to Salata for his act of “vigilante ...

‘Making Homes Work’ helps disabled adults make their homes more accessible

The Bay Area Housing Corporation received a matching grant from Santa Clara County to support its Making Homes Work program. The Los Gatos-based program helps families modify their homes by installing ramps, remodeling  bathrooms or improving wheelchair access through hallways and doors, which enables people with disabilities to stay in their homes rather than moving to specialized housing.“We recognize that people with (intellectual and developmental disabilities) have few housing options,” said Kris McCann, executive director of Bay Area Housing Corporation. “The cost of housing in Santa Clara County for the size of a home required for a specialized licensed home averages $2.4 million. Once the costs of rehabilitation of the home and long-term maintenance are added, the expense for opening a new specialized residential home becomes prohibitive.”Approximately 80% of Santa Clara County residents who have intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) live in their family homes.
