The key thing to know about Amazon's new tablet

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 08:40:08 GMT

The Amazon Fire Max 11 is Amazon's best tablet yet. It has a premium design, good accessories, and it's fast.Still, there is one notable downside you need to know about. But first, the pros.Hardware wise, you get a lot.The 11-inch screen gives you a lot of space to watch stuff, I just wish text was a bit sharper on it.For the first time there is a fingerprint reader to unlock. I found it to be fast and efficient. There are decent speakers, 64 gigs of onboard storage and even a MicroSD memory card slot, which is a rarity these days.Even the cameras looked sharp in my Zoom tests. The base price is $230 and if you add the keyboard case and stylus, it's still just $330.Now, the problem: the software. This device runs an Amazon specific version of Android called FireOS. It's there to primarily serve up Amazon products and services.Out of the box, there are no Google apps installed. That means no Chrome, no Gmail, no Maps, no YouTube. It's odd for an Android device. There's also no Google Play...

Bay Bridge lane where toll worker was killed by drunk driver will remain closed: Roadshow

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 08:40:08 GMT

Q: I have been driving across the Bay Bridge for a very long time now and wonder when they are going to fix lane 14. It has been closed for years now. Today I almost got sideswiped by someone going too fast. When that driver got to the closed lane (14), they cut me off and almost caused an accident. When you are approaching the toll plaza, the lanes curve and you don’t notice that lane being closed until you are almost on top of it.Can you shed some light on this?DaveA: There are no plans to open lane 14, which hasn’t had any toll collection equipment since a horrific collision occurred in the lane on Dec. 2, 2017. The hushed removal was Albany’s attempt to finally allay accusations of constitutional violation, address residents’ resentment about one religion being given preference over others, and free up more space on the 1.1-acre plot of what is now public park space. But the cross’ ouster is only the latest chapter in a contentious years-long fight between the city and the Lions Club, a community service group, which has traditionally lit up the cross every Easter Sunday and Christmas week. The city is now “preserving” the cross in storage, but city officials did not respond to repeated requests for clarification on its current location, citing pending litigation.“The city has actuall...
