ROYAL OAKS, Calif. (AP) — A dilapidated greenhouse at a Northern California nursery was home to dozens of farmworkers and their families who were living in tiny and unsafe dwellings without ventilation, authorities said Friday. Officials found 62 makeshift dwellings inside the greenhouse on a property in rural Monterey County that were put together with plywood, sheetrock and other materials, said Nick Pasculli, a county spokesperson. “There are exposed gas lines and wiring, no proper sewer. The conditions are very rough,” Pasculli said. It was not yet clear if the farmworkers were employed at the nursery in the community of Royal Oaks or just lived there, Pasculli said. He added that some residents were paying up to $2,000 per month in rent and one told investigators he had lived there for more than eight months. Nor have investigators determined yet where the migrant families are from, according to Pasculli, though some of them speak indigenous languages native to the Mexican stat...

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — California’s budget deficit has soared to nearly $32 billion, Gov. Gavin Newsom said Friday as he announced a plan that would cover the shortfall this year while potentially leaving the state with multibillion-dollar deficits in the future.Newsom, a Democrat in his second term, proposed no major tax increases for individuals or spending cuts across the state’s most important programs, including those impacting public education, health care and homelessness. His plan would cut spending by about $10.6 billion — about $1 billion more than what he proposed in January — while covering the rest of the deficit through a combination of borrowing and delaying some spending while shifting other expenses to different sources.“This was not an easy budget, but I hope you see we will try to do our best to hold the line and take care of the most vulnerable and most needy, but still maintain prudence,” Newsom said.Unlike the federal government, California must ...

AUSTIN (Nexstar) — After two previous attempts that were delayed by parliamentarian moves, the Texas House advanced a bill that would ban gender transition care for Texas minors. Senate Bill 14 passed the Texas House on second reading. The bill still needs final approval on third reading to advance. That vote has yet to be scheduled, but will likely come Monday.Texas House Democrats twice leveled a successful procedural objection to SB 14 last week, presenting a roadblock to the Republican priority legislation after a vote was delayed earlier in the week when opponents filled the chamber’s gallery in protest.LGBTQ protesters marched to the Capitol on Friday morning to again oppose the legislation, saying it presents great harm to transgender youth and takes control away from parents and guardians. The Twins were well aware of the shoulder injury Tyler Mahle sustained last July while with the Cincinnati Reds, just weeks before they traded for him.But they still felt confident in the information they had at the time, making the decision to part with three prospects — more on them later — to bolster a rotation for a then first-place team that needed pitching help. Mahle, the Twins hoped, would help pitch them to a playoff spot and would be an important piece of this year’s rotation, as well.Of course, it didn’t work out that way.The Twins announced Thursday that Mahle, who is a free agent after this season, will undergo Tommy John surgery. With that announcement, it’s very likely that Mahle has thrown his last pitch as a Twin. But while the Twins didn’t get anywhere near the production from Mahle they had hoped for, president of baseball operations Derek Falvey expressed confidence in the team’s process.“Our view of Tyler was that there was some shoulder strain...

Recently, though, they have seen a change from people asking for money to confrontations in their diner."My family has been in Albany for over 30 years and this is the worst that I have seen it. When it becomes aggressive and people start feeling uncomfortable to come to work, it's not okay," explained Anthony Mitsios. First Friday returns to Albany To come up with solutions, the Mitsios family invited fellow business owners and Albany officials to the diner. The Albany police department continues to respond to threats in the area, but are not legally able to offer the services considered 'quality of life'.
